DIY Dolly / Cameradolly for use with timelapse (motorized)

Table of content

Introduction

Timelapse movies are something special. They capture events that take place over a long space of time and then show them all again in a few seconds or minutes.

To make the movies even more interessting, you can add a slight movement to the video. To do so, you need a device which can move the camera very regular and precise.

In this tutorial I will show you, how I built my Camera dolly, and which problems you have to solve.

The plan

It is very important to have a plan, before you begin to build your DIY Dolly. While planning you spot all the problems you have so solve. After finishing the plan, you know exactly which parts you need and where you have to do what :-)

That's why I decided to create a 3D-Animation which shows how I wanted to build my Dolly:

This video shows a 3D animation of my DIY Camera Dolly.

Anyone who thinks "Hey, I know this one" is right. It has a strong similarity to the famous Dynamic Perception Dolly. But when I was building my dolly, the DP was not in stock yet. And I wanted a dolly that you are able to take with you, wherever you go - even if you fly in a plane.

Necessary parts

So, which parts did I use tu build my dolly?

First of all the parts that I ordered from "item" in Germany. I build the rail with these parts:
For building the mechanical actuation I used parts from Meadler in Germany:
I ordered the stepper motor and the gear from Nanotec in Germany:

Vielen Dank Patrick
